Memorial Day Assembly - May 23rd

At our Memorial Day Assembly, two members of the SUES family  were honored for their military careers - Mr. Ryan and Mr. Palermo.

Mr. Ryan, RN - currently one our school nurses here at the Upper Elementary School, was a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force  and served in Vietnam in the 27th Air Evacuation Unit. This unit was responsible for stabilizing the wounded and evacuating these soldiers to more advanced medical facilities in Europe and the United States.

Mr. Palermo - currently a 5th Grade Science & Social Studies teacher, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and after a tour of duty was transferred to the Army reserve.  In total, Mr. Palermo had 20 years of service and retired with the rank of Major.  During his years in the Army, he was stationed in North Carolina, Virginia, Greenland, South East Asia, Kentucky and New Jersey.

On January 10, 2008 the SUES was visited by a soldier, Lt. Edward Marion.  Last year the students in Mrs. O'Keefe's, Ms. Shortis' and Mrs. Brady's classes wrote letters to Lt. Marion and other servicemen.  Theses classes also helped coordinate the Soldier Drive which collected and sent many boxes of supplies to soldier stationed overseas.  Lt. Marion came to the SUES with his mother while he was home on leave to say thanks and to meet the students from our school.

Mrs. Gabriele and Ms. Shortis are working on a project "Conversations with a Veteran" where vets visit our school all year long and meet with students in smaller groups to make the visit more intimate and memorable. It is our goal to have vets for each teams of both grade levels in the building.  This is First Sergeant Robert Bruce, whose son is a fourth grade student at our school. He is in the reserves and is also a member of the Sayreville Police Dept.
