Annual

Give Kids A Smile! Day

Friday, Feb. 5, 2010

Friday, February 5, 2010, will mark the seventh year of Give Kids A Smile! (GKAS) National Children’s Dental Access Day. The New Jersey Dental Association has been a participating state since the program’s inception in 2003. Since then, more than 13,000 children age 12 and under have come through the program and have received nearly $2.4 million in free dental services at more than 80 locations across the state. And, the program continues to grow!

Parents, guardians, school nurses and community leaders have taken advantage of this incredible opportunity to have free dental care for children in need as well as introducing children to dentistry via a positive, fun-filled day of learning about the importance of oral health.

Vaccinations

When the vaccination for Novel H1N1 is available (late Oct-Nov) the district will work with the Health Department to plan for vaccinations on a voluntary basis.  The Seasonal Flu Vaccination protects against three other strains of flu expected to be active this fall.   The seasonal flu vaccination is available now through family physicians and at other locations. The Seasonal Flu Vaccine does not protect against the Novel H1N1.

Healthy Habits

Why Is Hand Washing So Important?

Hand washing/sanitizing

Elementary: Hand washing is being
emphasized for students before lunch, with both soap and water in classrooms with a sink or the use of a hand sanitizer in those classrooms without sinks (hand sanitizer is at least 60% alcohol as recommended).  Bottles of hand Sanitizer have been placed in every classroom as well as the lunchroom.

Extra cleaning during the day

Cleaning procedures during the school day of common surfaces (bathroom fixtures, water Fountains, cafeteria tables, etc) are being given priority in order to reduce the spread of Germs. The flu virus only lives from 2-8 hours so while night cleaning may ensure that  infection does not spread day to day, extra cleaning during the day is important.
