Counselor’s Corner

Whenever I ask a child what is your favorite thing to do, the reply is usually to spend time with a parent, grandparent, or a loved one.  Yes, this is the number one reply over video games, playing with friends, and watching T.V.  Now is the time to make memories, and spending quality time with your child is priceless.  The following are some fun activities you might want to try this summer:

  1. Tell them a story.  They love stories and this enhances their imaginations.  In turn, they can tell you a story, too.
  1. Read to them and have them read to you.  This is a great way to communicate, explore, and learn.
  1. Go on a picnic, yes a picnic.  Food, fun, games, and time together.  Don’t forget to bring your insect repellant.
  1. Bake, cook, and make S’mores.  Children love this time spent together.
  1. Grow a garden.  Teach your child how to plant and enjoy the joy of seeing the growth and beauty of their own garden.  They can plant vegetables.
  1. Eat dinner together.  This is a priority.  This is a wonderful time to get to know your child a little better.
  1. Go camping or just simply go to the park and enjoy the outdoors with your child.
  1. Spend time alone with each of your children, if possible.  Children love the attention and the love they receive during this time.  This reassures them that they are special.
  1. Put out a fish bowl or a container of some sort.  Whenever you feel your child has done something that really pleases you, ask your child to write one thing that they would like to do with you.  At the end of the week, have your child pull one out and do it!  This will create motivation for positive actions.
  1. Lastly, let them know that you love them and enjoy your summer.

I have spoken with so many of you throughout the year and have gotten to know your children.  It is my pleasure to work with the parents and children of Arleth and look forward to our next school year.
